As I said before, our last trip to Gdl did not really go as planned. I was a little upset because a lot of the things I wanted to do were closed! I wanted to see a night tour of the Panteon de Belen and of course they didn't have any that week.

I also hoped to catch a ballet folklorico recital but that didn't work out either. The U de G dancers are supposed to be some of THE best in all of Mexico. I really believe it too.

However, we did come across a great new Italian restaurant called Angelo. It was super romantic and the food was pretty good too!

You'll find them on Sta. Monica No. 970

Have some faith!

A few days ago, I received a request to put up a personal prayer to the Virgin of Zapopan on the link below. It's really sweet.

Here it goes, "I ask that the Virgin of Zapopan grant me this: By the end of this year I want to meet the man of my dreams to marry and start a family with."
Silvana from Costa Rica

I hope that this will happen for Silvana.

If your curious about the Virgin of Zapopan, she's the Patron Saint of Guadalajara and is known to grant many miracles. Read up on more below.

Mordidas- What the heck are they anyway?

Mordidas which really mean (bites) are commonly known as bribes.

Some police officers in Mexico might ask you for a bribe if you happen to be pulled over for speeding or some other minor infraction in Mexico.

On the way down to Mexico, Antonio told me he was pulled over. Imagine that! I'm not surprised one bit, because he's always speeding.

Here's the funny part : the policeman asked if he had any water.
Tiene usted agua? Tengo mucho sed. Antonio said this meant he wanted some money. He then pretended to not know what the policeman was talking about and said "Oh yes sir, I have some bottled water in the back! I'll get it for you."

The policeman, realizing that Antonio
didn't understand said "Never mind." And then he was released without his ticket.

Please Note:

If they do happen to give you a ticket in Mexico, your license is usually confiscated which you can pick up at city hall in return for paying your ticket.

From Nuevo Laredo to Guadalajara

In case you were wondering, Antonios road trip from Laredo, Texas to Guadalajara took 10 hours.

He passed through Nuevo Laredo, Monterrey, Saltillo, Matehuala, Aguascalientes, Lagos de Moreno, San Juan de Los Lagos, Tepatitlan, Zapotlanejo and finished in Guadalajara.

The total cost for gas (one way) was $100 in a 4X4 V6 Jeep Cherokee. We recommend you gas up from Laredo, Texas since the gas is cheaper and probably a higher quality and use the Autopista de Cuota which was a total of $70 (U.S.)

Note: The autopista does not accept U.S. dollars, so you must exchange your dollars for pesos.

Antonio returned from his short business trip to Guadalajara. Sorry, no pictures this time, however, he did find a great coffee shop in Guadalajara called La Selva Cafe Cafeterias.

They have some of the best coffee I've ever tasted. He purchased two bags of
their gourmet coffee and now our house smells like a coffee shop! Delicious!

The coffee shops are all over Mexico, one in Spain and just one (so far) in the U.S.

They are located on Lpez Cotilla 2008, Col. Arcos Vallarta

He went by car by way of Laredo. It's about a 10 hour drive from Laredo to Guadalajara (depending on how fast or slow you go). I will keep you posted on how his trip went. I made him take the camera so let's hope he has some nice shots for us!

Day of the Dead Altar

Here is a picture of my personal altar I made for my grandparents to celebrate the Day of the Dead on November 2 and 3.
<left><img border="0" src="http://www.explore-guadalajara.com/images/myaltar.jpg".jpg" align="left" width="250" height="333" alt="My altar" hspace="10"></left>

I made 3 sugar skulls for each of them. They were surprisingly very easy to make and lots of fun.

I used about 2 cups of sugar and for each cup I added 1 teaspoon of meringue powder. I also added 1 teaspoon of water per cup of sugar. Pack to sugar tightly into your mold and invert onto a cookie sheet to dry out! Decorate as desired.

This is a familiar image and an old favorite of many by artist Jose Guadalupe Posada (1851-1913). Ive seen it everywhere and think it has come to be a wonderful representation of death.

I read somewhere that Day of the Dead is a really expensive holiday and that prices of the Cempasuchitl (Marigolds) skyrocket during this time. I guess that doesn't surprise me since it is considered the "flower of the dead."

Im going to post pictures of my personal altar soon so stay tuned!

What I miss about Guadalajara

One of the benefits of not living in Guadalajara permanently is that
you can appreciate a lot of little things that full time residents might take for granted after awhile. Bear with me here, do you know that old saying... you appreciate and value something much more when youve lost it? Well I think it can apply here.

For instance, when we go down for a regular visit I love the excitement of just being there. I miss seeing all the street vendors selling water, cokes and popsicles. You dont even have to leave your car! I miss hearing the sound of the man in his truck (whose job is to drive around neighborhoods and sell propane) with that funny recorded announcement El Gaaaaaas. This may sound silly, but I always smile when I hear it.

I miss the friendly dogs wandering around the city and also the roof dogs (guarding their posts like little soldiers). I also miss the luxury of going to the mall and having your car washed while you shop.
Lastly, one of my favorites is having some coconut juice fresh from the coconut!
<left><img border="0" src="http://www.explore-guadalajara.com/images/cocos.jpg".jpg" align="left" width="200" height="150" alt="Man selling coconuts in Guadalajara" vspace= 50 hspace="15"></left>

These are just a few of the many reasons I miss Guadalajara and why Ill keep going back for more.

Panteon de Belen

Hello all! Day of the Dead is fast approaching and Im really excited about it. Unfortunately for me I probably will not be able to make it down to Guadalajara for this special occasion. Im disappointed about that, however, I DID find an interesting ad on Craigslist about the Panten de Belen. This guy is volunteering to spruce up the gravesite of anyone's relative buried in the Panteon. What a special way to honor a loved one. I think that's pretty cool.

This holiday is my absolute favorite. Ive added some new information if youre interested in celebrating Da de los Muertos at home. Im going to be making my own altar soon and Ill post pictures up later for you to peek at.

Panteon de Belen Information

Day of the Dead is coming soon and due to this I've been getting a lot of questions lately on the Panteon de Belen. I've posted their phone number at the bottom for those of you who would like to know the schedules of plays and events. I think they're extremely busy right now. I've been having trouble getting through but maybe you'll have better luck!
